Sculpture by the Sea, Aarhus - Denmark Opens

07-Jun-2011

The second edition of Sculpture by the Sea, Aarhus has opened with 65 sculptures by artists from 22 countries along the bay, beach and in the forest of Aarhus. There are some stand out pieces including works by Hiroaki Nakayama (Japan), Vaclav Fiala (Czech Republic), Keld Moseholm (Denmark), The Glue Society (Australia), Chen Wen Ling (China), Tim Prentice (USA), Karin van der Molen (Holland) and Phil Price (New Zealand)… but you decide for yourself as images are available in our image gallery.

The opening itself was also a spectacular with the attendance of TRH Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark along with thousands of people to hear Crown Princess Mary open the exhibition in her fluent Danish - very impressive! The enthusiasm of the Danish people for the Royal couple is something to see, as is the enthusiasm of the Royal couple for the exhibition, with an unscheduled extension of their tour.

Many of the international artists came to Aarhus to join their Danish colleagues and were feted by party after party and the tens of thousands of visitors who visited the show over the first weekend in gorgeous sunshine (after a week of late winter rain enjoyed by the site crew and artists during install!).

An early crowd favourite is 'I wish you hadn’t asked' by the Glue Society which is a fully furnished house from which 200 litres a minute of water rains down from the ceiling onto the punters walking through in raincoats. A riot! Loved by children as summer has just arrive in Denmark so not everyone was wearing raincoats.

The forest is a special treat with installations hidden and standing out among the trees including 'Jellyfishes' by Hannah Streefkerk (Holland) and 'Chimney Totem' by Tony Davis (Australia) and Mark Nixon's (England) installation under a small bridge titled 'Chimecco'.  When asked how someone from England knew about this tiny bridge in the middle of the Aarhus forest Mark confessed to a Danish girlfriend living in Aarhus - their is too much love at SxS!
