This temporary annual outdoor exhibition showcases over one hundred sculptural works and contemporary practices, including site specific and ephemeral installations, by Australian and International artists. The exhibition takes place along the iconic coastal walk between Bondi and Tamarama beaches. Adjacent to cliffs and ocean this public walk way encompasses Marks Park and Tamarama Park and is interspersed with staircases and occasional seating. The sculptures themselves are constructed from a diverse range of materials. We advise that children are supervised at all times by an adult. Works that are NOT safe to touch are labelled accordingly.
A vital and exciting component to Sculpture by the Sea is the Education Program which takes place during the exhibition.
The program provides an exciting opportunity to stimulate teachers and students, expand language and observation skills and encourage creativity.
Our Education Program provides an exciting opportunity to stimulate students, expand language and observation skills and encourage creativity.
The key outcome of our Education Program is for students and teachers to develop their understanding of, and individual responses to, sculpture as a visual art form though directed interactive discussion and art making activities with exhibiting contemporary artists and Sculpture by the Sea Educators. Other outcomes include:
an affordable visual arts experience in an out of class room environment that is both educative and enjoyable;
the opportunity for experiential learning whereby all students can engage with processes and techniques in creating sculptures in a unique environment; and
a supportive and creative setting in which students from diverse backgrounds can work together to develop positive relationships.
Visual Art plays an important role in the social, cultural and spiritual lives of individuals. It offers a wide range of opportunities to appreciate meaning personally, culturally and as a form of communication. Individuals who are disadvantaged economically, geographically, socially, or culturally have limited access to these experiences. By developing a unique, affordable, creative and accessible education program, Sculpture by the Sea hopes to provide quality education experiences to an increasingly diverse audience. Working directly with exhibiting artists and experienced Sculpture by the Sea Educators in unique and inspiring settings, we seek to engage and challenge participants to maximise their individual talents and capabilities.
Our organisation provides an open welcoming and safe environment for all program participants and visitors.
