Awards & Subsidies

NSW STATE GOVERNMENT SUPPORT

Thanks to the support of the new NSW State Government, through Arts NSW, we are able to re-introduce our minimum artist subsidy of $2,000 for each artist who does not otherwise earn this amount of income from the exhibition.

We would like to especially thank the Premier Barry O’Farrell and the Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Hospitality & Racing and The Arts George Souris for enabling the exhibition to take this major step forward. This represents an important turning point after 14 years of minimal State Government support. Thank you!

THE BALNAVES FOUNDATION SCULPTURE PRIZE

The Balnaves Foundation Sculpture Prize for the winner of the Bondi exhibition of $65,000.

The Balnaves Foundation Sculpture Prize is an acquisitive award with the winning sculpture gifted to the Royal Botanic Gardens for permanent public placement as part of the Sculpture by the Sea Collection.

2011 and past recipients

(Please note that not all of the sculptures in the Bondi exhibition are made available for this acquisition prize by the artists, and works that are not made to stand the rigours of time are not eligible.)

THE TRANSFIELD HOLDINGS ARTISTS SUPPORT

Thanks to Transfield Holdings we have been able to increase our support for the exhibiting artists by providing all of the crane and heavy equipment required to install and remove their sculptures. This is the first year that we have been able to provide this support to the artists, who previously had to meet these costs themselves. This added support for the artists is another step forward for the exhibition which is still evolving from our starting position of nothing 15 years ago. Thank you Transfield!

THE HELEN LEMPRIERE SCHOLARSHIP

The Helen Lempriere Scholarships are the realisation of a bequest by the late Keith Wood, honouring his wife, Helen Lempriere. Helen Lempriere was one of Australia's leading female artists in the mid-20th Century, attracting national and international acclaim for her painting, printmaking and sculpture. Sculpture by the Sea is proud to be managing in partnership with Perpetual, three scholarships of $30,000 cash that will be received by the awarded artists to assist with the advancement of their careers through study or research.

THE CLITHEROE FOUNDATION EMERGING ARTISTS MENTOR PROGRAM

In 2006, the Clitheroe Foundation and Sculpture by the Sea established The Clitheroe Foundation Emerging Sculptor Mentorship Program, awarding $10,000 each to 3 selected artists. The mentor program aims to encourage professional and meaningful fellowships between emerging sculptors and established practitioners. In benefit of Sculpture by the Sea's established organisational framework, the program facilitates a skills exchange between the emerging artists and their mentors and provides a forum for the professional and technical development of the emerging sculptors.

The three artists selected for the 2011 Clitheroe Emerging Sculptor Mentorship Program were:

  • James McCullem mentored by Dave Horton
  • Ben Fashem mentored by Simon Perry
  • Tania Spencer mentored by Bryan McKay
