Last night was the opening party for Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2012. Held at The Bucket List at the Bondi Pavilion, it was a beautiful evening where artists, patrons and sponsors were able to let their hair down and mingle.

What better way to get people thinking, and talking, then to create a five metre dinosaur sculpture made entirely from old modems and phone handsets? iiNet, well known artist Dion Hortsmans and a bunch of local school students will carefully construct the aptly named sculpture, Giig-a-saurus, throughout the duration of this year’s exhibition.

GhostNets Australia will present free workshops as part of the public programs at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2012. The workshops will take place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October at the Tamarama Park Education Hub from 10am – 12.30pm and 1.30pm – 4.00pm.

Past SxS artist Ayad Alqaragholli recently participated in an Australian–Japanese Cultural Exchange exhibition in Kyoto alongside Western Australian artist Ron Gomboc. He exhibited his works for the first time to a Japanese audience, together with the nine other artists from Australia and Japan.

For many years, Dinosaur Designs have been hand-crafting the well renowned wave-shaped Sculpture by the Sea awards. With only five weeks to go before the opening of the 16th edition of Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi the Dinosaur Designs team are busy sculpting fourteen of the iconic ocean-blue designs which will be gifted and announced to each award-winning artist at the exhibition opening party on Thursday 18 October.

As recipient of the Helen Lempriere Bequest Scholarship in 2011, Sculpture by the Sea artist Marcus Tatton was awarded $30 000 to put toward advancing his contemporary artistic practice. With the support of the scholarship Tatton has been able to progress various elements of his artistic career, some of which include updating his artist website to reflect a more professional public profile, visiting world famous art galleries, museums and sculpture parks for artistic development, and his most recent project; developing his home studio. Here Tatton reflects on how he has used the scholarship for artistic growth.

So far in 2012 Sculpture by the Sea has been fortunate enough to be involved in working with five very worthy charities, The Benevolent Society, Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation, Hands Across The Water, Grace Gala, School for Life Foundation. By donating Artist Led Family Sculpture Workshops, Twilight Tours of the upcoming Bondi exhibition and several sculptures to these charity fundraising events to auction off we have helped raised over half a million collectively.

Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe 2013 will be held from 8 - 25 March 2013 and we are currently accepting artist submissions for the exhibition. Last year we received almost 200 submissions from practically all over Australia and from 18 countries worldwide..

Sculpture by the Sea today announced three young NSW artists as recipients of the Clitheroe Foundation Emerging Sculptor Mentorships of $10,000. The 2012 recipients are Elyssa Sykes-Smith, Kate Stehr and Aaron Anderson.

Sculpture has a long-standing historic association with Chatsworth, one of Britain’s oldest estates. Since 2006 the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire have been hosting outdoor sculpture exhibitions in the magnificent grounds and this year marks the first monographic installation of a living sculptor’s work.
