Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi announced the recipients of the Allens Arthur Robinson People's Choice Prize and NAB Kid's Choice Prize at a ceremony held in Mark's Park, Bondi today, Sunday 20 November, 2011.
The recipients were presented with their prize by Their Royal Highnesses The Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark, who visited the exhibition during Their visit to Sydney for State of Green from 21-24 November. The exhibition is one that is close to The Crown Prince Couple's hearts - in 2000 His Royal Highness The Crown Prince and Tasmanian-born Mary Donaldson visited the Bondi exhibition shortly after the Sydney Olympics.
South Korean artist Byeong-Doo Moon received the $5,000 Allens Arthur Robinson People's Choice Prize for his stainless steel "cosmic elk" entitled I have been dreaming to be a tree ... II. The stunning sculpture, which stands on a rock ledge looking out across the ocean to Tamarama Beach, was chosen by the visitors of Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2011 as their favourite. Moon used blacksmithing to transform the cold mass of steel into an organic, fragile work of flowing elegance.
Highly regarded Sydney artist Ken Unsworth received the NAB Kid's Choice Prize for his fibreglass skeleton Look this way. The sculpture has attracted the attention of kids and adults alike throughout the 18 day exhibition, as it sat atop a ladder in Mark's Park overlooking Bondi Beach. The skeleton was the most popular sculpture of the many thousands of children who visited the exhibition from 3-20 November, with over 2,600 students attending the NAB School Education Program.
The Premier of NSW Barry O'Farrell MP attended the presentation, speaking about the NSW Government's support for Sculpture by the Sea through the introduction in 2011 of $1.2 million in funding over 4 years. Mr. O'Farrell acknowledged The Crown Prince Couple for Their support of the popular arts exhibition after They introduced Sculpture by the Sea to Denmark where it has been held as a biannual exhibition in the City of Aarhus under Their Patronage since 2009.
Exhibition Founding Director David Handley is happy with the 2011 show, "It has been a really enjoyable exhibition visited by 500,000 people from across NSW, as well as interstate and overseas visitors. That Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary have been able to join us as well is a wonderful 15th birthday present. Thank you to everyone who has come along and to the artists for creating such a diverse and dynamic show - and a big thanks to Barry O'Farrell who has come on board with the first decent State funding in 14 years."
Byeong-Doo Moon was also awarded the Sculpture by the Sea Staff Choice, presented by Dinosaur Designs. Mayor of Waverley, Councillor John Wakefield presented the Waverley Council Parks Staff Prize to Sydney artist Belinda Villani for her woven rattan lions, predators in the park.
