Against the Grain

10-Jul-2012

Stephen King is having a solo exhibition of recent work at the New England Regional Art Museum, Armidale which continues until 5 August.Thisis a large exhibition of work produced over the last three years including a number of maquettes and constructions which have grown out of his figurative work. All carved from fallen timber on Stephen's farm in Walcha in the Northern Tablelands of NSW, Stephen's sculptures have a raw immediacy. His towering roughly hewn figures reveal an appreciation of the beauty of the timber and his love for the marks made from the chainsaw. Stephen works instinctively and the work grows organically from one work to the next. His most recent constructions are continuing his exploration ofthe strength and beauty of wood.
