Come and join us for our Last Weekend!

17-Nov-2011

This year’s exhibition has been a hit with kiddies through to art critics (well most anyway) so if you haven’t been to see the exhibition yet or want to come one (or two) more times this is the last weekend as the sculptures come down on Tuesday.

If you want to see the sculptures unanimously enjoyed by the critics of our three major reviews (Christopher Allen, The Australian, John McDonald, SMH and Sasha Grishin, Canberra Times) they were (in alphabetical order):

  • Linda Bowden
  • Dave Horton
  • Ron Robertson-Swann OAM
  • James Rogers
  • Paul Selwood (winner of the Balnaves Foundation Sculpture Prize)

Here is what Christopher Allen had to say about Ron Robertson-Swann’s sculpture Inner Sanctum: "Among the distinguished works in this year's exhibition is one by Ron Robertson-Swann which rather suggests an alter surrounded by screens. But importantly, the work has a strong sense of grounding at the same time is conceived in volume, in three dimensions. In contrast, many of the other abstract works, even when they are technically three-dimensional and superficially animated, demonstrate little ability to think volumetrically."

… and what John McDonald wrote of Descending the Mountain by Linda Bowden: "From an impressive group of works by younger sculptors one might single out Linda Bowden’s Descending the mountain, a beautifully conceived and coloured ensemble, in which a group of metal forms lean against one another in echo of a rocky landscape. The catalogue refers us to Duchamp’s Nude descending a staircase but this requires a leap of the imagination".

Or if you want to see the sculptures with the most votes so far in the people’s choice prize, they are, in no particular order

  • Simon McGrath
  • Byeong Doo Moon (South Korea)
  • Belinda Villani
  • Juan Pablo Pinto & Clary Akon
