Sculpture has a long-standing historic association with Chatsworth, one of Britain’s oldest estates. Since 2006 the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire have been hosting outdoor sculpture exhibitions in the magnificent grounds and this year marks the first monographic installation of a living sculptor’s work.
The Duke of Devonshire writes: “It is entirely appropriate that we should start this programme by celebrating the work of Britain’s most important living sculptor and I am delighted to welcome the artist and his multitude of fans to the garden at Chatsworth.”
The fifteen sculptures lent to the exhibition by the artist reflect his major concerns over the past four decades, from the 1960s to the late 1990s. Sited around the Canal Pond and in front of the south façade of Chatsworth House are examples of his early painted abstract sculptures; works emphasising the natural surface of the steel, some of which he has treated in their engineering like folded paper; and some recent imposing and architectonic works which demonstrate Caro’s continual experimentation with the surface, form and structure of steel, including ‘Goodwood Steps’ and ‘Double Tent’.
At 88 years of age, Caro has had a prolific career spanning six decades, where he has exhibited his sculptures in a vast number of locations in Britain and overseas. Caro’s magnificent sculptures at Chatsworth flourish and, according to Tate director, Sir Nicholas Serota, have “never looked better" than juxtaposed with Chatsworth's baroque splendour.
