Education Highlights from Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe 2011

27-May-2011

The Alcoa School Education Program experienced a notable rise in attendance at Sculpture by the Sea in Cottesloe this year. Over 2,350 primary and secondary school students visited the exhibition at Cottesloe beach and participated in our Artist-run Sculpture Workshops, Exhibition Tours led by Sculpture by the Sea Educators and Artist Talks (secondary students only).

This figure represents a 40% increase from last year's total participation in the School Education Program. Significantly contributing to this marked increase was the newly revised format of the Exhibition Tours, for which the number of bookings alone exceeded last year's by nearly 900%! In conjunction with the continued popularity of the Sculpture Workshops, the new Educator-led Exhibition Tours offered school groups a unique engagement with the works on display, with tour content closely orientated to school education curriculums.

Another milestone achieved at Cottesloe this year was the introduction of the Tactile Tours Program, facilitated in partnership with DADAA (Disability in the Arts, Disadvantage in the Arts) for visitors with disabilities and their carers. The Tactile Tour program was run free to participants, thanks to the generous support of Lotterywest. Over 480 bookings were received for the tours, which were conducted every day of the exhibition and led by Guides from both DADAA and AGWA with years of experience in the disability sector.

With thanks to our Education material sponsor, Chroma Australia, Sculpture by the Sea was also able to reward our younger audiences for their participation in our educational activities and programs for the first time this year. Congratulations go out to Sophia Silbert of Mosman Park for winning first prize in the Cottesloe 2011 Kids' Guide My Favourite Sculpture drawing competition. Sophia's depiction of Artwork no. 54, Dance me to the edge of time, by BAM (Pamela Lee Brenner & Emma Medwell), impressed the judging panel with her careful selection of colour and attention to detail.

Sophia, 81/4, chose BAM's 'sand-shoe' installation as her favourite sculpture at this year's Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe beach "because it inspires me - the recycling and sand for shoes, it is an awesome sculpture". Sophia is now the proud winner of $100 worth of quality art supplies from Chroma Australia.

All school groups booked into this year's School Education Program at Sculpture by the Sea went into the running to win the School Education Program Prize of $500 worth of quality art supplies from Chroma Australia for their school. Congratulations to the students of Year 1 at Our Lady's Assumption School, and their teacher, Ms Josephine Vivante, who won the inaugural prize for their excellent participation in the Sculpture Workshop program, and their extra efforts in completing a series of drawing competition entries together as a classroom activity - what a great idea!

Sculpture by the Sea would like to thank everyone who entered their drawings in the My Favourite Sculpture competition, and to all the school groups, both booked and self-guided, who came down to visit our exhibition at Cottesloe on excursion. We hope you found your visit both enjoyable and inspiring and look forward to seeing you all again next year!
